THE HEARING & SPEECH CENTER OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA appoints Creator OF EARBUD JACK to board OF DIRECTORS
Founder of What If Widgets Accepts Board Appointment, Strengthens Partnership
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (May 7, 2008) – Mike Simmons, founder and Chief Tinkerer of the San Francisco company What If Widgets, was selected by the Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California to be the newest member of their board of directors.
“I initially became involved with the Center when researching recipients for charitable donations,” said Simmons, who founded What If Widgets with a mission of giving to charitable organizations. The company’s business model includes giving a percentage of the sales of each product to a selected cause.
“Since our flagship product, earbud JACK, helps people organize their earbuds and cords, I wanted to support a cause that was relevant to these customers, namely hearing loss,” explained Simmons. “When I stumbled upon the Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California, I was struck by their passion and dedication to helping people deal with hearing loss, and I was drawn to support them.”
Now, 5% of earbud JACK’s sales are given to the Center, based in San Francisco, and another organization, the American Hearing Research Foundation, located in Chicago.
“Mike’s recognition of the need for corporate ventures to contribute, collaborate and participate with social ventures and community serving non-profits was a quality that made him a perfect candidate for our Board of Directors,” said Center CEO Darragh Kennedy. “Mike’s integrity, ease of nature, and entrepreneurial thought process has strengthened our Board, and his understanding of the complex and devastating issues involved with hearing loss brings a valuable perspective to his governing role with the Hearing and Speech Center.”
“I am excited to serve the Center as a director,” said Simmons, “and I look forward to providing expertise and elbow grease in addition to some of JACK’s proceeds.”
